Gestational hypertension

• Elevation of previously normal blood pressure to 140/90 in the third trimester, without protein in the urine or other abnormalities

• May be an early harbinger of preeclampsia

• The earlier the onset, the more likely the hypertension will progress to preeclampsia

• If hypertension remains mild, the outcome is usually the same as a woman who does not have hypertension

• More common in pregnancies of twins or triplets
